Summary

Debian has such a terrific set of packages its a good choice for NODOWS. However, because it is so flexible, it is a little bloated for specific targets.

I've been working on a bunch of ways to leverage the great work put into the debian distribution, while lifting some of the requirements. Voyage linux helped me get started on this, and since then I've been trying more brute force methods to get even smaller debian systems.

Two Bases

I'm currently (early 2009) working on two base images, one larger sized image which uses mainly standard debian components, and a squashfs based image, which is quite smaller.

Now in Feb 2009, I'm still working on two bases, both of which use squashfs - one with openvz and one without.

Questions

  • Can debconf be replaced with cdebconf? This would remove the need for perl.
